The Cat Who Missed the Old Rug

The Rug: A Parable of Grief

The Rug: A Parable of Grief

"A cat’s favorite rug was taken away to be cleaned, and in its place was a brand new, soft blanket. The cat refused to sit on the blanket, mourning the smell and texture of the old rug. Only when he realized the blanket was a gift from the same hand that gave him the rug did he find his rest again."

Core Spiritual Concept

Acceptance and Impermanence

The old rug was frayed and smelled of dust and sun, a map of every nap he had ever taken. The new blanket was "better" by every measure, but it wasn't HIS. The cat, Barnaby, sat on the cold floor in protest. But as he watched his owner place the blanket by the fire, he saw the love in the gesture. Grief is the transition between two ways of being loved.
